Story:
In 1929, American history changed forever. The Stock market crashed on Tuesday, October 24th. This crash cost many people their jobs and put America into an economic downward spiral. This economic struggle in America was called the Great Depression. People who lost their jobs and had no income moved into shelters called Hoovervilles, named after the President at the beginning of this time, President Hoover. In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President. He had to overcome many challenges and struggles, including an illness called polio, which occurred when he was 39 years old and which caused him to be partially paralyzed for the rest of his adult life. He created the New Deal, which was a series of bold economic experiments to help bring America out of its slump and provided federal aid for many people during this time; something that had never been done before. His wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, was also an influential person during this time making great strides in the Civil Rights Movement. Together, they changed America and made history as the only President to be in office for 4 consecutive terms. Towards the end of his last term, the United States had begun its recovery, but was on the eve of entering into WWII.
